The process — step by step
Formal complaint to the bank

8-week clock
Banks have 8 weeks to resolve a complaint. After this, or following a final response you reject, you can escalate to the FOS.

Important warnings
For APP fraud, contact your bank immediately — same-day reports have the highest recovery rates. Then follow up with a formal letter.
Account closures require reasonable notice — if yours was sudden, there may be grounds for complaint.
Keep records of all transactions, letters, and calls with dates and reference numbers.
